Usually, the MLB season is spoken about as a grind, like a marathon. But the 2020 season is going to be a strange one for the Cardinals and every team. This season will be a full out 60-game sprint to the finish line for a championship opportunity. So it’s with that in mind that we present the three key series for the St. Louis Cardinals in 2020.
Key Series #1: 6 of 10 at Home against Pirates
The St. Louis Cardinals are a top team in the National League Central Division, and they will square off against the NL Central basement dweller Pittsburgh Pirates. The Cards will host the Bucs for six of ten games at Busch Stadium. As we’ve documented throughout this series, playing at home is an advantage. St. Louis will not have an easy road to the World Series, but they will gain an edge in this matchup.
Key Series #2: 7 of 10 on Road against Cubs
In the same way that the Cardinals have the advantage by playing the Pirates at home, they lose that against the Cubs. The Cardinals will be on the road for seven of ten games at Wrigley Field. Advantages in baseball can be easily erased by a good start from a pitcher. But playing in seven of those tens games on the road places the Cards at a disadvantage. But if the Cardinals can walk away with a win in the majority of those games, they can take the division.
Key Series #3: “Field of Dreams” Game Series (August 13th)
On August 13th, the Chicago White Sox and the St. Louis Cardinals will face off in a “Field of Dreams” game. This game will take place near the site in which the Field of Dreams movie was filmed, in Dyersville, Iowa. Seeing the field transformed to allow Major League Baseball to play this game will be something akin to a dream. Yes, the Sox and Cardinals will play the remaining two games of the series that weekend. But for this Thursday in Iowa, everyone will have their eyes tuned in to watch a game played on a “Field of Dreams.”
