Usually, the MLB season is spoken about as a grind, like a marathon. But the 2020 season is going to be a strange one for the Giants and every team. This season will be a full out 60-game sprint to the finish line for a championship opportunity. So it’s with that in mind that we present the three key series for the San Francisco Giants in 2020.
Key Series #1: 7 of 10 on Road against Dodgers
The San Francisco Giants will be facing an uphill battle all season long. No matter whether it’s 60-games or 162 games, the Giants were going to struggle in 2020. Adding, however, to their misery is the fact that they will be the runaway favorite in the National League West Division, the LA Dodgers, for seven games on the road. And that does not bode well for the Giants. San Francisco is a team that is now in a state of rebuilding. And going against the most potent team while being the weakest is a recipe for disaster.
Key Series #2: 7 of 10 at Home against Diamondbacks
Now, the schedule for the Giants won’t be easy. However, playing more home games gives San Francisco a slight break. The Giants will face the Arizona Diamondbacks ten times, but seven of those matchups will come at the expansive Oracle Park. San Francisco will be without their franchise star Buster Posey for the 2020 season but have plenty of other fan favorites taking the field. (Despite there being no fans in the stands.) Arizona will likely be the better team, especially when evaluating the two teams on paper. But the great game of baseball isn’t played on paper; it’s played on the field. And if the Giants can crush the rattlesnakes in the majority of this series, they could easily find themselves in NL Wildcard contention.
Key Series #3: 6 of 10 at Home against Padres
The Giants will spend six of their ten games against the up and coming San Diego Padres at home. Playing at Oracle Park can be a tricky field to navigate. The San Francisco Giants will need to capitalize on this lopsided home schedule if they have any hopes of competing in 2020.
