3 Key Series for Angels in 2020

Usually, the MLB season is spoken about as a grind, like a marathon. But the 2020 season is going to be a strange one for the Angels and every team. This season will be a full out 60-game sprint to the finish line for a championship opportunity. So it’s with that in mind that we present the three key series for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in 2020.

Key Series #1: 7 of 10 at Home against Mariners

Playing in the MLB West Conference will give the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim some advantages and some disadvantages. One such advantage will be playing against the lowly Seattle Mariners. The Mariners weren’t a strong team in 2019, finishing with a 68-94 record. But the Angels weren’t much better finishing with a 72-90 final record. But in 2020, in a shortened format, the Angels have made some much-needed improvements to their team. While adding to their pitching depth with some potential reclamation projects that could find lightning in a bottle, the Angels also signed Anthony Rendon. This added protection for Mike Trout will see the Angels take advantage of the Seattle Mariners

Key Series #2: 6 of 10 at Home against Astros

However, on the flip side, one such disadvantage of playing in the MLB West Conference will be playing against the Houston Astros. Playing ten games against the Astros in any season is difficult, but more so given the limited number of games on this year’s schedule. However, the Angels will be playing six of those ten games at the confines of Angel’s Stadium. The games against Houston will not be easy, but Mike Trout will have a crew around him unlike one he’s ever had before.

We already spoke about the aforementioned, Anthony Rendon. But add in a returning to full strength Shohei Ohtani, and a healthy Justin Upton and the defensive wizard that is Andrelton Simmons and the cast around Trout looked better. The Astros will be a difficult matchup, but the Angels can take advantage of the lopsided home schedule they can make a push for the postseason.

Key Series #3: 6 Games against the Dodgers

Interleague play can be a fickle mistress, and for the Angels, she is downright cruel. While a team like the Oakland Athletics get to play the SF Giants for six games, the Angels face the Dodgers. The Los Angeles Dodgers were already a contender for the 2020 World Series before the offseason began. And then they went and added Mookie Betts.

These six games will be split evenly in terms of home and home. But that will serve as little comfort to a team trying to push towards the postseason. Arguably the two best players in the game in Mike Trout and Mookie Betts will be engaging in an entertaining battle. But it will require a full team effort from the Angels to take down the Dodgers.
