Predicting Yankees Post-Season Roster

The MLB Playoffs begin this week, and the Yankees will face the Minnesota Twins. Thus we must look ahead to the roster the Yankees will carry this October. Beginning with the Bronx Bombers Starting Lineup.

Leading Off for the Yankees

  1. DJ LeMahieu- 3B
  2. Aaron Judge- RF
  3. Didi Gregorius- SS
  4. Giancarlo Stanton- LF
  5. Gary Sanchez- C
  6. Brett Gardner- CF
  7. Edwin Encarnacion- DH
  8. Gleyber Torres- 2B
  9. Luke Voit- 1B

The Yankees everyday lineup is stacked and has produced an average of 5.85 Runs per Game. That mark of 5.85 R/G currently tops Major League Baseball and places them just head of Minnesota (5.81.)The Yankees have a versatile lineup with interchangeable parts. So now we look at the Yankee bench.

Yankees Offensive Reserves

  • Backup Catcher- Austin Romine
  • 4th Outfielder- Cameron Maybin
  • Backup Infielder- Gio Urshela
  • Utility- Tyler Wade

We had a piece earlier this month about three members of the New York Yankees that MUST be on the Post-Season Roster. (3 Must-Have Yankees on the Playoff Roster.) In that piece, we detailed that Clint Frazier was a necessary addition to the Post-Season roster. And at the time the health and stability of the four Yankee outfielders were being called into question. However, now it seems as if they are all healthy enough to play this October. So we move onto the “Starters.”

Initial Out Getters

This is where the Yankees will be different than in previous years. As we have seen traditional starters Masahiro Tanaka, JA Happ, and CC Sabathia all work in relief over the last week of the season. So we make our prediction for the “initial out getters.”

  • Friday, October 4th “Initial Out Getter” – Luis Severino
  • Saturday, October 5th Starter – James Paxton
  • Monday, October 7th “Initial Out Getter” – Masahiro Tanaka
  • Tuesday, October 8th “Initial Out Getter” (If Necessary) – Chad Green
  • Thursday, October 10th “Initial Out Getter” (If Necessary) – James Paxton

Now as all elimination games go, if the Yankees and Minnesota Twins get to a Game Five situation, it will be all hands on deck. And if that need for a fifth game arises the bullpen will be called upon to shoulder a heavy load. So here are the arms designated to shoulder that load.

All Hands Pen

  • Closer – Aroldis Chapman (obviously)
  • Setup/High Leverage – Zack Britton
  • Opener/High Leverage – Chad Green
  • High Leverage/Right-Handed Lefty Specialist – Tommy Kahnle
  • Setup/High Leverage – Adam Ottavino
  • Lefty Specialist/Long Relief – CC Sabathia
  • Lefty Specialist – Nestor Cortes Jr
  • Middle Relief/Mop Up – Luis Cessa
  • Extra Game Starter/Long Relief – JA Happ

The Yankees can not take the Twins lightly, despite their history of dominance over the organization. This is a different Twins team then the Yanks have faced in the past. We have an accompanying installment of the Pinstripe Plunge Report on this very topic. The installment is entitled, Who Makes the Yankees Post-Season Roster?
