Many details of the Sasha Banks situation are still cloudy or unknown. But there are a ton of opinions about Sasha and the situation. So for this piece, we’ll offer our take on all that we know.
The Cause
By most reports the booking decision to have Sasha Banks and Bayley (1st ever WWE’s Women’s Tag Team Champions) lose their WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships at Wrestlemania and the subsequent breakup of their tag team was the main cause of frustration. This would cause Sasha Banks to inform WWE of her desire to quit the company while at this year’s Wrestlemania event. Reports stated that Sasha (and Bayley) would feel that their team had so much more they could do to elevate the Women’s Tag Team Championships. (And in my opinion, given the fact that the IIconics have done nothing with them since acquiring them helps validate Sasha’s frustration.) There were so many potentially iconic (no pun intended) matchups Banks, and Bayley could have had with teams. The loss of the Championships at Wrestlemania felt premature.
The Response
Many times fans of pro-wrestling will differ in their responses to different topics around the industry, and this situation is no different. Sasha Banks has been a controversial character throughout her time in WWE. But even more, scrutiny has fallen upon her during her absence. Sasha would inform WWE of her desire to quit the company during Wrestlemania 35. And following the loss to the IIconics in the Fatal Four Way Championship matchup, Sasha has not been back to WWE. Sasha’s extended “vacation” from WWE has turned some of wrestling fans against her, while others support her decision.
Personally, I understand Sasha’s stance; I was a huge believer in the Banks and Bayley as the WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions. There were many fantasy matches that could have been seen. Matches versus the likes of the Sky Pirates (Io Shirai, Kairi Sane) in NXT, the Divas of Doom (Beth Phoenix, Natalya), and even Trish Stratus and Lita. And now these are matches we are unlikely to ever seen take place.
The Result
Well, the result is yet to be determined. It was reported that Sasha met with Vince McMahon and that discussion went well. But we still have yet to hear any kind of real update on a return to television by Sasha Banks. It’s also been reported that Sasha is doing work for WWE on the new WWE video game. This information leads to the belief that Bank’s absence was decided upon as a gimmick for a storyline. But the prolonged nature of the absence makes that less and less believable. There have also been reports to surface that Sasha asked for her release and has contacted AEW about working for the new promotion.
Sasha Banks is still under contract and therefore would be forced to sit out the remainder of her deal. And if rumors are to be believed, Sasha and Bayley signed a multi-year contract just a year ago. So anyone looking forward to Sasha Banks in AEW by ALL OUT, don’t hold your breath.
It’s All Up to You
When it comes to the Sasha Banks situation, just about everyone will have a different opinion. Because this situation is not a cut and dry scenario, there are layers of complication. And it’s for that reason that there is no clear winner. But because of the situation, everyone is a loser as a result of it all.
As a fan of Sasha Banks, I do hope that something gets resolved because her talents are missed in the top-heavy women’s division. But that being said, I also don’t want to see Sasha go back into a situation where her love and passion for pro-wrestling are stripped from her heart. We have seen how that can play out. (CM Punk.) But if the love and passion can outlast the frustration, we could see a scenario play out more like that of Jon Moxley. But for now, it’s a waiting game. Hopefully, we won’t have to wait too long.
