WWE Evolution Recap

Last night was the first ever WWE all women’s pay-per-view WWE Evolution. There were mixed reactions for the event in general. However, I believe this event is long overdue and I was very much looking forward to the event since it’s announcement. So let’s get right to our recap of WWE Evolution.

PSA: I just want to make it clear this event is something that I feel the WWE put together as a way to downplay the rising tension over their dealings with Saudi Arabia. I have covered that topic once before so I won’t harp on it for this historic event.

However, I do just want to say that I think the WWE has treated this event as an afterthought. And that the build was not given the proper dedication it was due. But the women delivered regardless of the lack of build. Including the return of Lillian Garcia. And the commentary team including WWE Hall of Famer Beth Phoenix and Renee Young.

Trish Stratus & Lita vs. Mickie James & Alicia Fox w/ Alexa Bliss

Laracuente Ledger Rating: 🌟🌟🌟 1/2

The crowd was extremely electric for the start of the matchup. Lita would begin with Mickie James and the match would be fast paced and high octane. It would also give the WWE Universe a blast from the past with a little Poetry in Motion. This was a great way to start an incredible event. Lita would spend much of the matchup being double teamed by Fox and James. Once Trish got the hot tag the matchup would turn pace.

  16. Ivory (15)
  17. Asuka (16)
  18. Torrie Wilson (5)
  19. Peyton Royce (1)
  20. Billie Kay (2)

This battle felt like a thrown together bout in the build to Evolution. But despite that this match delivered in a big way. The booking of the twenty women, past and present gave all the women involved a chance to shine. Most battle royals have a distinct nature and an air of predictability. Yet this match felt like any of the final women were capable of winning. With that being said the winner Nia Jax will be a tough test for the winner of the RAW Women’s Championship match.

Mae Young Classic Tournament Finale: Toni Storm vs. Io Shirai

Laracuente Ledger Rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟 1/2

For anyone who has not watched the Mae Young Classic this matchup was the best representation of the entire tournament. Toni Storm and Io Shirai are two of the best women in the wrestling business today. Toni Storm is the youngest competitor competing on the Evolution card. The athletism of both of these women is second to none. Io Shirai would demonstrate the high flying ability that gave her the nickname the “Genius of the Sky.” Ultimately the power of the 22-year-old Toni Storm would bring her the victory with her finisher the “Storm Zero” (Tiger Driver.)

6 Women Tag Team Match: Riott Squad vs. Sasha Banks, Bayley & Natalya

Laracuente Ledger Rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Liv Morgan would begin with Nattie Neidhart and she would display her “delinquent” behavior. Nattie would tag in Sasha and together the would pay homage to Nattie’s father Jim the Anvil Neidhart with the Hart Attack. These women would truly al have a chance to shine. Bayley would be on the receiving end of much of the beat down by the Riott Squad. The teamwork of the Riott Squad would be on display. Sasha would attempt a dive over the top only to be caught and smashed hard into the guardrail. Bayley would sacrifice herself to save Sasha from a diving senton by Ruby Riott. That save would allow Sasha to recover enough to tag in Natalya. Mattie would come in and start cleaning house. It would how, however,n out to be the teamwork of Sasha, Bayley, and Natalya that would prove victorious.

NXT Women’s Championship: Shayna Baszler vs. Kairi Sane

Laracuente Ledger Rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

These two women match up so well. The fire and aggressive nature of Baszler would match up well with the speed and agility of Sane. This feud has been one of the best I’ve seen in a long time. The women in the WWE aren’t always given the best storylines to work with. But in NXT they are given those opportunities. Shayna would spend much of the matchup working on the arm of Kairi Sane. Shayna would also put on display the evil sadistic nature that she has come to be known for. Kairi Sane would be on the receiving end of serious looking assaults to the left arm. Kairi would continue to fight back against Shayna. Shayna would show off the incredible savage nature of her character when she would lift Sane in the corner by her hurt left arm. Shayna Baszler’s
“Four Horsewomen of MMA” buddies would get involved. Kairi Sane would get caught by Baszler’s Kirifuda Clutch. Sane would valiantly try to battle out of the Kirifuda Clutch but to no avail. Baszler is your winner and two-time NXT Women’s Championship.

Smackdown Live Women’s Championship-Last Woman Standing: Charlotte Flair vs. Becky Lynch

Laracuente Ledger Rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

The “former” friendship would allow these women to have an in-depth understanding of one another. Becky would control much of the early going of the match. The crowd in this match would be split about 50/50 in cheering for Becky and Charlotte. Becky would begin to assault Charlotte with a Kendo Stick relentlessly. But while divided on their allegiances they would all agree “they want table” and chanting ECW as the women would toss multiple chairs into the ring. The violent nature of a Last Woman Standing match would bring out the creative nature of both women. In my opinion, the WWE messed up by not having this match go on last. Because this match hands down stole the show. I can’t begin to describe just how awesome this match was.

RAW Women’s Championship: Nikki Bella w/ Brie Bella vs. Ronda Rousey

Laracuente Ledger Rating: 🌟🌟🌟 1/2

Ronda has adapted to the WWE beautifully. Ronda would take hold over Nikki to start out the match. Nikki would show visible frustrated. Ronda, however, would get distracted by Brie Bella as get ran into the ring post. Nikki would display an aggressive side in her efforts to dethrone the champion, Ronda Rousey. I was very impressed by Ronda’s ability to sell the assaults of Nikki and Brie Bella. Brie Bella would play a factor all through the matchup as one would have expected. Ronda would attempt a Diving Crossbody but Nikki would out of the way. Nikki would attempt a Baseball Slide but Ronda would move. Ronda would then grab hold of both Bella twins in a Samoan Carry position. Ronda would deliver Rowdy Buster. Nikki Bella would deliver the Rack Attack but Ronda would kick out at two. But ultimately Ronda would lock in the Armbar for the victory.

Overall WWE Evolution Rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟 1/2

During the WWE Evolution kickoff show, Stephanie McMahon was interviewed and she said that the feeling she had tonight was like Wrestlemania. And while yes you have to take that as a marketing and buzzword ploy there was a very similar feeling in the air. I was very much looking forward to WWE Evolution and it did not disappoint me whatsoever. I am proud of all the women that competed on the Evolution card and who have and will have competed in the wrestling business all around the world.

While this was not the first ever all women’s pay-per-view. It was the first time in WWE, making it a very historic night. Witnessing the hard work these very talented women put on full display last night was amazing. And make me proud to call myself a fan of Women’s Wrestling.
