The MLB season is in full swing and teams are near the time of the year where they start making moves aimed at the playoffs. With that in mind, we cover some of the teams rising towards those dreams. But also those falling from those goals. And don’t forget to take a look at some previous installments of this very countdown of 3 Up and 3 Down.
1 Up- New York Yankees
The Yankees are playing the kind of baseball that was expected from them this season after their “Cinderella” type run from last season. However, even with the high expectations, the Yankees have been playing well. With a record of 38-18, the Yankees are currently a game behind the Red Sox for first place in the AL East. The Yankees are among the teams expected to be aggressive at the deadline, and their hot play this season just assures that.
1 Down- Philadelphia Phillies
After a rough start to the MLB “Opening Weekend” the Phillies had been on a tear all season. However, recently they have hit a bit of a cold streak. The very young Phillies team is expected to rebound as their young players are extremely talented. But over their last 10 games, the Phill’s are just 3-7 and coming off a three-game sweep at the hands of the San Francisco Giants.
2 Up- Chicago Cubs
Cubbies fans are smiling as the Cubs they came to know during their World Series run of 2016 are beginning to return. The Cubs have gone 8-2 over their last 10 games and are in the midst of a 4 game win streak. Though the NL Central Division leaders are the Milwaukee Brewers. The Cubs are heating up and can still make some moves at the deadline for more depth if they need too.
2 Down- New York Mets
For everything good that the Yankees have experienced this season the other New York team has not fared as well. The New York Mets have been hampered by injury and ineffectiveness all season long. After beginning the season as the hottest team alongside the Boston Red Sox. They have fallen hard in the opposite direction. Sitting 7 games behind the first place Atlanta Braves in the NL East. The Mets are at present moment 2-8 record over their last 10 games. The Mets need to find a spark to turn this around or they will find themselves as sellers rather than buyers at the trade deadline.
3 Up- Seattle Mariners
In back to back weeks the Mariners find themselves making this countdown. And that is thanks to another stretch of 8-2 over their last 10 games. Looking longer still, the Mariners are 15-5 since MLB suspended Robinson Cano for his use of PEDs. The Mariners are currently in first place in the competitive AL West division. And while unexpected the Mariners will continue to push forward to try and erase their 16-year playoff drought this season.
3 Down- Baltimore Orioles
At the outset of the season, Baltimore was not a team that was expected to be tanking. Those teams were the Chicago White Sox, Cincinnati Reds, and Miami Marlins. However, with their play thus far this season that is the company that the O’s are keeping. With an overall record of 17-41, Baltimore has lost 8 of their last 10 games including a 7 game losing streak. And for good measure, they are already behind 23 games behind the first place Red Sox. Baltimore needs to find a way to establish value in their players and trade them at the deadline.
B.O.L.O.- Arizona Diamondbacks
Just last week the DBacks looked lost and in danger of surrendering first place in MLB’s NL West division. And though they briefly did, the Snakes regained their composure and control over the NL West. After going 6-4over their last 10 games the DBacks will try to continue putting distance between them at the rest of the division.
