3 Takeaways From The Yankees Home Opener

The Yankees have high expectations that have been placed on them. The aspirations are once again World Series or Bust. This is something that has been expected from the Yankees since “The Boss” George Steinbrenner purchased the team in 1973.

The Yankees’ played their first game at Yankee Stadium of 2018 in a contest against the Tampa Bay Rays. The game faced many issues due to weather, but one thing was certainly apparent and that was Didi Gregorius is Brian Cashman’s best trade ever.

Didi Loves Yankee Stadium

Didi has become a cult type hero is the Bronx from his heroics during the 2017 playoff run and especially what he did in the Home Opener. Didi has 8 rbi’s 2 home runs and played stellar defense in terrible weather conditions.

Monty Proves He Belongs

All throughout the off-season it was suggested that the Yankees needed to get another starting pitcher as if Jordan Montgomery couldn’t repeat the success from his rookie campaign. Well, on Opening Day in the Bronx he proved he can most certainly handle pitching in the Bronx. Monty gave up just one run, scattering two hits through five innings of work. Jordan didn’t have his best “stuff” either as evidenced by his four walks but he also had four strikeouts. Jordan is proving his worth in the Yankees rotation.

Helping Holder and Swingin’ Stanton

Jonathan Holder has been unsuccessful at his name’s sake so far in this early part of the 2018 season. He hasn’t been able to get outs and “Hold” the lead where it is. Right now Holder has an ERA. (Earned Run Average) of 40.50. Yes, that is not a typo his ERA is in the 40’s. Now that’s not to say that Jonathan can’t one day be a very good Major League relieve,r however, it is to say that right now manager Aaron Boone can not continue to press Holder into situations in the Bronx where the odds are not favorably in Holder’s direction.

The opener for Giancarlo Stanton was not great as he went 0-5 with 5 strikeouts. Stanton then became acquainted with the “Bronx Boo-Birds” but he did not shy away from them or the media following the game. Owning his rough first outing in Pinstripes bodes well for Giancarlo, and look for him to rebound against the Rays today.

The New York Yankees are going to be expected to produce at a high level based on talent and expectation. This club can, not just, compete but win the World Series in 2018 and moving forward. The Yankees will continue their Quest for Number 28 (Championship) today when Luis Severino takes the mound.
